Campus can be a large and confusing place for a first year undergraduate or graduate student. Here's what you need to know.
Ohio Stadium- The famous Horse Shoe where The Ohio State Buckeyes display their superior football talents. Even if you’re not a football fan (you are an Ohio State student, right?) the Shoe is an impressive sight to see – it is the sixth largest stadium in the world, once was home to the Columbus Crew, has hosted Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones (among others), and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is understandable why they re-routed the Olentangy River in order to build it.
Wexner Center for the Arts- This place is a bigger deal than most students think. The Wex always has great exhibits going on.
Campus Gateway- Movie theater, bars, Long’s Bookstore, and a popular place for students to gather. Need I say more?
The Arena District and the Short North- Art galleries, bars, hockey games, concerts… there is little that the Arena District doesn’t have. Walking along High Street and looking in at all of the shops and galleries makes a great study break on a nice afternoon. You can even stop by Goodale Park over on Buttles just past High.
Easton Town Center and Polaris Shopping Mall (off-campus)- Two of the biggest shopping malls possible.
Olentangy River Bikeway and Jogging Path- Nothing beats this scenic route that follows the river. Great for bicycling, roller skating, jogging, walking the dog, or just going out for a walk. You pass a bunch of parks (including the Park of Roses) and even some hidden trails in the woods that will take you to some amazing hand-built bike jumps and right up and close to the undisturbed parts of the river where you can sit back with a book or some friends and chill on the ground or in a tree, listening to the rushing waters of the Olentangy. You can also rent all sorts of boats from the OAC or ARC over on West Campus and go for a trek along the river.
Park of Roses- It’s a park of roses. Beautiful place for a stroll in the spring time when the flowers are blooming.
Downtown Columbus- Caught in the middle of an identity crisis, Downtown Columbus offers a little bit of everything – from the Mr. Peanut shop to COSI (the coolest science museum ever) to the Santa Maria (Christopher Columbus’s ship) docked in the Scioto River. Definitely worth checking out – it may not be New York City, Chicago, L.A. or Atlanta, but it’s sure trying, with a little bit of each and more.
Columbus sports teams- The Blue Jackets (hockey), Columbus Crew (MLS Champions), and the Clippers (baseball) are real sports teams located a quick bus, walk, bike, or car ride away.
The "Kosher Kroger" on Broad Street, just past James, has the biggest selection of kosher products – from Kedem grape juice to kosher pizza, meats, cheeses, candy, macaroni and cheese, and tons more!
Chani's, over on Broad Street and Gould, offers kosher cooking, baking, and catering. She has salads, brisket, schnitzel, salmon, pastrami, soups, kugles, and even sushi!
Whole Foods Market actually has quite a lot of kosher food.
Trader Joe's is actually the best place to get kosher grape juice. Trader Joe's sells Kedem at a really low price. They also have a lot of kosher frozen appetizers.
The Hillel Bagel Cafe on campus serves dairy items for lunch and meat items for dinner. Please note that they do not serve Cholov Yisroel dairy if you keep it.
Giant Eagel also offers a rather nice kosher selection. Though not as big as the Kosher Kroger, Giant Eagle has frozen blintzes, veggie burgers, soups, and Dr. Brown’s (with Dr. Brown’s, what more could you need?). Plus they’re closer to campus. The GE on 5th Ave has the biggest selection.
Graeter's Ice Cream, a company born in Cincinnati, Ohio, serves some amazing kosher ice cream, for those who are tired of other foods.
The internet can be a large and confusing place for a first year undergraduate or graduate student. Here's what you need to know.
